Reviews for Jazz for Kids
Billboard Magazine - July 1, 2000
ALL THAT JAZZ: Boston-area singer Lisa Yves has produced
and compiled Jazz for Kids - Everybody's Boppin', featuring Yves
singing with her own students on standards like Twisted, In a Mellow Tone,
and Sing, Sing, Sing and on a number of her own compositions. The album
appears on DCC Compact Classics, wholesaled by Ryko Distribution.
Yves, reportedly the first woman to major in vocal jazz performance at New
York University's School of Music, altered lyrics where necessary to make
them more appropriate for young kids: Miles Davis' Freddie The
Freeloader, for instance, is metamorphosed into Roy G. Biv; Dizzy
Gillespie's A Night In Tunesia here becomes A Night with Bach
In Tunesia, with Yves' lyrics wondering how Johann Sebastian Bach
might have reacted to some of the legendary originators of bebop.

Jazz for Kids - Everybody's Boppin' by Lisa Yves & Luli Music
Publishing (DCC Compact Classics, 2000, ASIN B00004TKO9) is a must for
every classroom, home & library. From the moment Louis Prima's
Sing, Sing, Sing, sung by children, ages 6 - 14, begins, you'll
be hooked - clapping, tapping, snapping and singing along [the words for
the songs are included.] I'm Beboppin' Too plays with vowels in
a musical style that is irresistible. 18 songs, many written by Yves
and sung by her, are not only jazzy but teach the basics of jazz as
in Alphabet Scat, or help listeners tap out 5/4 time as in Counting
to Ten. If you think Bach and Dizzy are worlds apart,
you haven't heard A Night with Bach in Tunesia. The icons of jazz,
Louie, Duke, Miles, Bird et. Al. have not
been neglected. This is an interactive CD that sings, swings and soars.
The musicians accompanying Yves groove with a "smoking" sound that
makes you sit up and listen. YOU'VE 'GOTTA' HEAR IT!

CD PICK OF THE WEEK - Jazz for Kids
Throughout my radio career, I have always maintained and promoted the
opinion that if America's only original musical art form, jazz, was to
survive, our young people must be made aware of its importance. That's
why I must praise this new release by Lisa Yves that features some of
her musical students, who range in age from six to fourteen. Yves teaches
her students that there is more to music than just rock, that jazz is
a more inventive way of musical communication. She loves and sings jazz,
and has convinced her students that they, too, can enjoy singing along.
There are eighteen songs on this recording, most of which are tunes recorded
by some of the great musicians, such as Dizzy Gillespie's Night in
Tunesia, Miles Davis' Boplicity, Neil Hefti's Cute and
Louis Prima's Sing, Sing, Sing. The release also features several
original tunes by Yves. This is authentic boppin', whether it shuffles,
boogies, or bops. Yves shows a knack as a lyricist with tunes like Bird
and Diz, Alphabet Scat, and Jazzabye. This is a dynamic
debut from a new face on the scene. My dear friend, the late Cal Tjader,
once told me, "The viewpoint may change, the form may change, but if
it's jazz it still has to swing." Pick up a copy, sit back and let
Lisa Yves and the kids make you swing.
